The Current State of Affairs:

The MENA region has been and will remain a geopolitical policy imperative. The importance can hardly be understated considering the economic, energy, cultural and security influence of the region on global affairs. Considering the prominence of MENA affairs and those regional actors who influence it like Turkye, FACT recognises and addresses the systemic failures in predictive analysis, using robust and internationally proven methodologies: 

  • ‘Excess Noise’. The knowledge production ecosystem: media, pundits, scholars, think tanks and consultancies often fail to pinpoint the core dynamics in the MENA that lead to instability. Their analysis is overwrought with logic frameworks that are not relevant, lacks on-the-ground expertise, is ahistorical and results in a lack of clarity which increases the ‘excess noise’. 
  • Disinformation. With excess noise generated by ‘experts’, disinformation has become a ubiquitous part of the information diet of the public and is a contributor to the deep socio-political polarisation across the region. 
  • Overflow of information. The continuous cycle of poorly organised, scattered and biased data creates chaos and blurs the understanding of the region.
  • Questionable reliability. Well-intentioned stakeholders, those seeking reform in the public sphere, either in civil society or electoral spaces, are at risk of undermining their credibility by engaging with firms that contribute to ‘noise’ rather than cutting through it.

Research & Development 

FACT is working with leading experts on the expansion and operationalisation of analytical technologies, foremost AI, into policy development. FACT understands both the potential and current limitations of AI to provide timely and accurate understanding of political discourse and sentiment, as well as social network analysis. 

What is missing in the AI and policy solutions field is that big data analysis misses crucial grassroots contextual insights.  FACT will be seeking to combine the nuanced and layered findings derived from grassroots research to inform emerging cutting edge analysis models with the expressed goal of solving complex policy questions so that large scale analysis of the region is not misleading.
